WHAT. A. WEEKEND. WOW. 2023 Garrison - Challen WHAT. A. WEEKEND.

WOW.

2023 Garrison - Challenger Weekend is done and DUSTED.

It was cold. It was rainy. It was cold AND rainy. And 358 toughed it out like the champs they are! This weekend included all the cadet units in the Niagara and Burlington region and was meant to expose all the elements to what the other elements do - Sea has power boating, Army has canoeing, and Air does survival training - so all the cadets who attended got to experience a little of what other cadets call 'normal'.

Is it too soon to say that everyone loved the sea elemental training? 😉

pic 1: group photo in the ever elusive sun (some of our cadets who attended had to leave for various reasons but they were with us in spirit!)
pic 2: nearly 500 cadets that attended
pic 3: SLt Brauweiler having fun on the Bos'n Chair (we'll make a post about that soon!)
pic 4: New Entry Chaparro on a power boat, rockin' it!
pic 5: MC Muir recharging by the power of the yellow sun.

I think our cadets were the first to bed 😅 lights out at 2100!

The point of this weekend is to expose each element to what the other 2 do: ie, we're taking the army and air cadets powerboating!

DID YOU KNOW? Royal Canadian Navy ships are group DID YOU KNOW?

Royal Canadian Navy ships are grouped together by class.
A class of ship is defined as: a group of ships of a similar design. This is distinct from a ship type, which might reflect a similarity of tonnage or intended use.

And the classes are named after the first ship in that class. The first example shown here for the Halifax Class, named after HMCS Halifax.

When these ships are together, they are referred to as a flotilla.
A flotilla is defined as: usually a group of warships of the same class (eg, frigates, detroyers, submarines)

RCSCC History Fact: Sea Cadet corps used to be grouped as Flotillas. If SIR ISAAC BROCK had existed then, we would have likely been apart of the Niagara Flotilla which consisted of:

141 BELLEROPHON - Welland
103 NIAGARA - Niagara Falls
78 VALIANT - Port Colborne
125 RENOWN - St Catharines
31 LION - Hamilton
65 IRON DUKE - Burlington
96 DUNDAS - Dundas
308 TRIUMPH - Stoney Creek

And were named the Niagara Flotilla because of our proximity to the Niagara River - which is as close to 'ships of the same class' as we could have gotten. Neat eh!?

September 30th Orange Shirt Day National Day for September 30th

Orange Shirt Day

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Today, we formally recognize our Indigenous communities in Niagara and all over Canada. An integral part of our nation, the Aboriginal Peoples diverse cultures and histories bring richness and wisdom with them.

The origin of Orange Shirt Day started with a little girl: Phyllis Webstad, a member of the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation. As she was taken from her home to attend St. Joseph Mission Residential School, outside of Williams Lake, B.C, her brand new orange shirt was taken from her and replaced with a uniform.

Now, it's an international movement to recognize the experience of survivors of residential schools, honour them and their families, and show a collective commitment to ensure that every child matters.

The date, September 30, was chosen because that was the time of the year the trucks and buses would enter the communities to “collect” the children and deliver them to their harsh new realities inside the residential school system.

We stand with our Indigenous neighbours and we honour them.

Throughout their time with the program, cadets are Throughout their time with the program, cadets are awarded many things from homegrown awards to nationally recognized awards. They're promoted and recognized for many things during their time with us.

The Cadet Long Service is a medal that cadets proudly wear on their uniforms as a symbol of their dedication and resilience within the CCO. Awarded to cadets for 4 years in the program, it marks a shift in their role within the cadet organization as they become the leaders within their corps/squadrons.

Additionally, for every year after 4 a cadet remains involved with the program, they receive what's called a Pip. If a cadet joins at 12 and is in the program until their 19th birthday, they would have acquired a medal with 3 pips.

Last training night, we were honoured to hand out 2 Long Service Medals:

MC Hawkins
PO1 Betancourt-Villa

And a 5 year pip:

PO1 Yantha

On 15 September, we commemorate the Battle of Brit On 15 September, we commemorate the Battle of Britain - a vicious night of warfare above the streets of London that had been set into motion more than a month prior.

More than 100 Canadians are deemed to have participated in the Battle of Britain, and 23 lost their lives. A Royal Canadian Air Force squadron fought during the Battle; No. 1 (RCAF) Squadron, whose pilots were from both a regular force unit and an auxiliary unit, became operational on August 17, 1940. It was known as “RCAF” to distinguish itself from the RAF’s No. 1 Squadron but in February 1941 it was designated 401 Squadron.

Three members of No. 1 (RCAF) Squadron received the Distinguished Flying Cross for their efforts during the Battle of Britain: the commanding officer, Squadron Leader Ernie McNab; his second-in-command, Flight Lieutenant Gordon Roy McGregor; and Flying Officer “Dal” Russel.

Canadians also fought in the RAF’s 242 (Canadian) Squadron, which was heavily, although not exclusively, Canadian. It was led by RAF Squadron Leader Douglas Bader during the Battle of Britain.

This was major win for the Allied Forces against the Axis powers and ultimately ensured the Allies had a base from which to launch the liberation of Europe on D-Day in June 1944.
